Six Orphan Homes for Little Children, Rosen Hallas, Tetlow Grove House, Cheetham Hill (1875-1920)
In 1875 the Refuge saw the need to provide for younger boys (those under ten years of age) and established the first Home for Little Orphan Children through a £600 cheque from William Atkinson of Southport. In the years that followed five additional orphanages were set up next to each other on George Street, each containing 16 children, and bearing the name of the family or individual who provided the necessary resources. The six houses, the Atkinson Home (No.10), Garnett Home (No.4), Crossley Home (No.6) and Higgins Home (No.8) for boys and the School Girls Home (No.12) and Langworthy Home, (No.2) for girls, all provided for needy children up until 1920, when a vast majority of the residents were transferred to Belmont Estate, Cheadle. The homes were based on providing a family-style atmosphere with the children attending neighbouring Board Schools. Langworthy Home and Garnett home were sold in 1945.
Tetlow Grove House was set up in George Street, Cheetham Hill, in 1896 and was used as a home for neglected motherless children, many of whom were girls. This widened the principle of admission of orphan children, many of whom were returned to their fathers after a few years. By 1904 this service had been transferred to Number 8, George Street, the Higgins Home.
Rosen Hallas was situated on the corner of George Street and Old Bury Road. Most of the girls housed here were trained in domestic duties or for life overseas and were emigrated to Canada. There was also an adjoining cottage to Rosen Hallas which was set up for weak and ailing children and was sometimes referred to as the seventh orphan home. The building was sold in 1922 to Higher Crumpsall Hebrew Congregation for £2300.
This series contains; History Books, Sale and Purchase Papers, Papers relating to the Salford Corporation Works and papers relating to the children.
