Belmont House, Cheadle (1920-1981)
Belmont Estate was bought for £5,700 by the Manchester and Salford Boys and Girls Refuges in 1920, to commemorate its Jubilee, and incorporated 22 acres of land. Here the Refuge created the 'Children's Garden Village', which was opened by The Earl of Stamford on the 2nd October. Originally the family home of the Milne family, of Kendal Milnes, Belmont House was included in the sale and became the first home on the site, open to destitute girls. By 1946 the home housed a mixed toddler group of girls and boys under the age of five and by 1957, Belmont had become a Family Group Home. By 1979 it was used as a 'short-stay' unit but by 1981 the referral rate had dropped rapidly resulting in its closure. The house was sold in 1983 for £146,000.
The Series includes papers for; Administration, Belmont Estate, Maintenance and Repair and Reports and Planning.
