In Feb 1958 Manchester Central Library was recognised as an approved Repository for Manorial Documents, and in Dec 1961 the library was recognised as a place of deposit under the Public Record Act 1958. In 1963 a separate Archive Service took over responsibility for the archives in the Local History Library.
