Bindery Department

1916-1959
Archives
The Library bindery specialised in the following: binding which could be done more cheaply than in a commercial bindery, for example periodicals; binding of rare and fragile materials needing special care; binding which needs to be done on the premises for reasons of speed or material being requested. The forwarding process involved the old binding or casing being removed if necessary, sections being sewn , and they are then bound in leather or cloth and finished with lettering.
The records of the Home Bindery have been sampled: one order book, one day book and one binding lists book from the mid-1930s have been retained to show the daily work of the bindery; other books have been destroyed. For external orders, see requisition books M740/3/2/1-18
