Science and Humanities (formerly Social Sciences) Library

1967-1969
Archives
Previously the Great Hall had been the point of access for the issue of all books from stack for all first floor departments. The Social Sciences department was created in the Great Hall in the late 1960s, following a series of reports on the Great Hall from 1964. In 2007 the Great Hall became the home of the Science and Humanities Library. The stock includes special collections, and books and other resources on computing, engineering, history, law, geography, medicine, politics, psychology, religion, science, sociology, technology and travel.

Custodial history:
The Great Hall, as it is now known, houses the Science and Humanities Library. It is 127 feet in diameter and the height from the floor to the top of the dome is 61 feet. It is encircled by twenty-eight Tuscan columns and in the centre is an Italianate well-head. The words inscribed around the inside of the dome are from the Book of Proverbs and were chosen by the architect: 'Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom, and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her and she shall promote thee; she shall bring thee to honour when thou dost embrace her, she shall give of thine head an ornament of grace, a crown of glory she shall deliver to thee.' Much of the original furniture designed by the architect can be seen on this floor.
