Deansgate Branch

1899-1913
Archives
In 1877 the original central library at Campfield was closed and the lending books were stored at the Town Hall for several years. A new library was incorporated into the Market building on Deansgate built by the Markets Committee and was opened on 5 Apr 1882. Part of the library's lending stock was the Books for the Blind collection. Until 1922 the Patents Library was situated at Deansgate and with its removal there was the necessary space for the re-arrangement of the library to allow open access to the books. The library underwent re-organisation and was re-opened on the 8 Dec 1922. The Deansgate lending library was closed on the 31 Mar 1934. There was a delay in the provision of books in this area until the new Central Library, St Peters Square was opened in late 1934. After it ceased to be used as a library the Deansgate branch was leased to the Education Committee for use as a Juvenile Employment Bureau.
