A typewritten statement of claim in the High Court of Justice 8th January 1876 between William Heyes (Claimant), Painter and Decorator of Bolton and Thomas Hardcastle (defendent) of Bradshaw. The writ was issud on 4th November 1875 and Thomas Hardcastle is charged with a failure to pay for work that William Heyes carried out at the Royal Oak pub on Bradshaw Brow, Bradshaw. William Heyes was claiming the sum of £89 15s 3d plus £2 10s interest for the work he had carried out. The solicitors dealing with the claim were Ramwell, Pennington and Sumner of Manchester. There is a handwritten statement of defence in which Thomas Hardcastle claims that the work carried out was of an inferior quality. There is also a letter dated 18th January 1875 from Withington, Petty and Boutflower to Thomas Hardcastle enclosing a draft copy of his defence and asking him to confirm the amount that he is willing to pay in court.
