Empire Day at Leigh Council School, Windermere Road, c.1925. The pageant was held in the boys' yard to enable the parents to stand outside the railings and watch. The girls dressed in the national costume sang a song for every country represented. The boys only came down to carry the headmistress's platform. The donor is pictured here representing Scotland in a kilt and jacket her father borrowed from a Scots builder who was working at the time in Leigh. In the afternoon the children were given a holiday.
