Mrs. Winifred Andrew at home at Staveleigh. Photo early 1970s. Mrs. Andrew was the daughter of Ernest Roger Garside, a cotton operative of Hyde. Mr. Garside was a vociferous Labour supporter and was connected with the Hyde Labour Church. Mrs. Andrew was in the early years Socialist in outlook. They met whilst students at Manchester University in 1919 and married in 1923. Mrs. Andrew trained as a botanist and later took a teaching Diploma. The family lived in Egypt and the Sudan from 1928 until 1955. From 1955 to 1957 they lived in Baluchistan whilst Mr. Andrew worked for the United Nations.
