This is the west side of no.2 Marlborough No.2 Mill, facing Oldham Road Its tall chimney has been very much reduced in height, for both it and the mill were very badly effected by mining subsidence caused by Moston Pit and Bradford Pit, taking out the rich coal from the 'Roger Seam'. I understand it is to have some of its top floors removed and will then be used as a supermarket. When I was a boy it was gas lit and on winter's evenings we would stand in Poplar St., and watch the silhouettes of the busy workers pass hurriedly by each window. 'Little Men' we called them. It was mills like this which made Lancashire famous, for its cotton. Their large coal fired boilers covered the whole area in soot.
