The house on the left of the photo is no.41 Daisy Bank, Newton Heath, Manchester, shortly to be demolished. (1974). It was in this house that I was born on 11th May 1907. About 1910 we moved from here to Miriam St. These houses consisted of four rooms, two up and two down, each less than 4 yards square. In these closely-knit homes it was common for parents to raise a family of 6-7-8-9 or 10 children. How the `hell' they managed I don't know, but they did. The Industrial Revolution, which started in the north of England needed millions of homes for the workers. So landlords built houses as small and as close together as possible.
