Photograph: In the photograph two young girls give President Khan garlands of flowers and was used in the Manchester Evening News, 23 Nov 1966. Yvonne relates the following regarding this photograph 'Husband suggested that I printed the fabric for these dresses. I did. Batik. My sari, shalwar kameez (tunic and trousers) for elder girl and dress for the youngest. Silk for me and one girl and cotton for the youngest . . . family of the youngest gave her an adult hair style and were shocked by cotton. COTTON!!! (only) [cott]on an occasion like this! I was in trouble . . . .'
'There is a little story behind this photo: In Pakistan, dignitaries were garlanded with marigold flowers. None available in Manchester in November. A green velvet ribbon overlaid with a white cotton cord: circles made with artificial flower stamens, with added colour created from thin slices cut from liquorice allsorts (off Urmston Market). Each circle laminated and added to the ribbon. Everyone delighted - no one ever guessed!'
