This our dark country the American settlers of Liberia

Reef Catherine2002
Book
Subject: This book outlines how the history of Liberia is intertwined with that of the United States. It examines how Liberia was born in the early nineteenth century when a group of prominent white Americans calling themselves the American Colonization Society set about establishing a colony for free blacks and former slaves. Both blacks and whites took passionate stands either for or against such a colony. In 1820, even as the arguments raged, the first settlers arrived on the west coast of Africa. This book provides the tale of their struggle to build a nation in the land of their ancestors. This accessible, well-written book is generously illustrated with period photographs and engravings.
