Yolam was born in 1954 in [Awaria] which at the time was part of the Gulu district but is now part of the Omoro district, northern Uganda. Yolam left Uganda during the Ugandan civil war where he was hunted by soldiers who purportedly thought he was supporting the rebels in northern Uganda. Exiled from Uganda Yolam came to the UK in Oct 1989. He was initially granted asylum and then after 4 years he was given indefinite leave to remain. While in Uganda Yolam was studying medicine, when he came to the UK he completed a degree in biology. He then worked as a carer in hospital until an accident forced him to leave work. He lost his wife in the UK and became sole parent to his two children. Yolam also developed and was a member of the New Cultural Group in the UK. Yolam has a lot of family still in Uganda and at the time of the interview was intending to return to Uganda.
