The Roots History project was an oral history programme featuring the lives of Black people in Manchester. The Project was funded through the government's Manpower Services Commission adult employment scheme and administered by a volunteer management committee. The initial material was drawn together in the late 1970s. In the early 1990s the extant material was collected for inclusion in the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre and supplemented by additional interviews. Further details about the collection history is included in the preface to the Roots oral history project bound volumes held in the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre library.
