The event covered in these photographs is the weighing of an elephant at the council weighbridge on Hyde Road, Gorton. This was the only time this elephant left Belle Vue. It was used in a 'Guess the weight of the elephant competition', organised by Sheffield University in aid of charity. The elephant was not weighed until all the competition entries were submitted to ensure that the competition was beyond reproach. The incumbent Lord Mayor of Manchester at that time was present.
