Began on 5th June 1882 as Smedley Road School separate departments for Boys and Girls. From 20 August 1901 the school became mixed.This followed the opening of Moston Lane School which took many pupils and staff from Smedley Road School. From 15th January 1940 the school was used for 'war-time instruction' for pupils from Smedley Road Mixed Department, Collyhurst Road Mixed Department and Burgess Street Boys and Girls Departments. By April 1940 Collyhurst Mixed Department and Burgess Road Girls Department had returned to their own premises. Some pupils were evacuated to Brierfield. From 3 November 1942 the school closed for the remainder of the war and pupils were transferred to Alfred Street, Harpurhey; Burgess Street, Harpurhey; Collyhurst,Collyhurst Road; Temple, Smedley Street, Cheetham; and Cheetham Senior School, Heath Street, Cheetham. By 1958 had been renamed Smedley Secondary School
