The Christian Worker' was a monthly magazine established in 1880 as the organ of the institution, providing information on the workings of the Refuge to interested parties. Often included poems, illustrations and music written especially for the magazine. This was edited by Gilbert Kirlew, who had become Joint Honorary Secretary of the Refuge from 1882. The magazine was halted in 1895 when Kirlew was forced to resign from the Refuge, following a report in a yellow press Manchester paper, 'Spy' accusing Kirlew of immoral behaviour with the boys. Although his name was cleared by 1898, and 'Spy's' editor Henry Yeo was sent to prison for criminal libel, Kirlew's work with the Refuge was at an end. The Christian Worker was replaced by a new magazine, 'The Children's Haven'.
