The first library opened in Gorton after incorporation was a branch on the junction of Gorton Lane and Belle Vue Street in 1894. Later a second library was opened in the Gorton area at Church Lane. The original library on Gorton Lane became known as West Gorton Library and the one at Church lane as the East Gorton Library. For the records of the East Gorton Library see M740/9/25. In Nov 1927 the basement at West Gorton Library was renovated and opened as a young people's room. On 31 Mar 1960 the West Gorton Library was closed and its stock transferred to the Cambert Lane branch it appears that the East Gorton library also closed and the Cambert Lane Library served the whole of Gorton. The current [2008] Gorton Library is situated at Garratt Way, Gorton.
