The Manchester Port Health Authority operates throughout the length of the Manchester Ship Canal and River Weaver. It was responsible for providing services to the maritime industry, and for protecting public health by preventing diseases from entering the country and ensuring the quality of imported food. The Authority also had responsibilities for protecting the environment. With the introduction of commercial flying, port health authorities in Britain became involved with airports.
