Pui Ching Chan was born in Hong Kong. Her parents had left their home town of Sun Wui and moved to Hong King in the 1930s to escape the war. She lived in a resettlement area and attended a local Christian school where her fees were paid by a Norwegian organisation. An aunt who lived in the UK introduced Pui Ching to her husband. They were married and moved to the UK in 1980. She lived with her in-laws in Wales helping them in their takeaway. Later she moved to Manchester.
