Iqbal Badat was born in India in 1950. The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 prompted the family move to the UK. The family arrived in 1966 when Iqbal was 16. After a short time living with an uncle in Preston the family came to live in Bolton. Although one of the motives for the move was to provide better educational opportunities for the children, Iqbal decided on his arrival in the UK to begin work. He worked for over fifty years in the textile industry in Bolton including for W. Openshaw, Tootal, Bedford New Mill and Swan Lane Mill. Iqbal worked his way up from labourer to the position of night shift production manager for Swan Lane mill where he worked until the early 1990s.
