Full recording of the Singing Heritage Event Part 1

All timings are approximate.

The session is bilingual in both Bengali and English. In many parts speakers undertake their own translation. When songs are described and introduced Bengali introductions are undertaken by Apu Chowdhury and English introductions by Dr Anindita Ghosh. At the start of the recording the sound drops out for short periods.

20:36-24:05 - Mr Abdul Nashir Wahah Chairman of the Greater Manchester Bangladesh Association officially opens the event
24:06-30:45 - Dr Anindita Ghosh introduces Krishnochura, a Bengali music group based in Stockport. Gives a brief overview of the types of songs that will be presented as part of the programme. Introduces first song.

51:57-57:33 - Dr Anindita Ghosh returns to the migrant experience. Importance of cotton to Lancashire: 1950s Lancashire cotton mill workers - video in English only. Then looks at the importance of migrants to the British economy particularly to the textile industry 1950s onward - video in English only (Link available in narrative script GB3228.95/1/2/1). Approximately 1 minute of this video was played at event (Video found to be unavailable 20/10/21).
57:33-59:30 - Dr Anindita Ghosh and Apu Chowdhury introduce Mr Habeebullah OBE JP
59:31-01:11:00 – Mr Mohammed Habeebullah OBE JP. Importance of heritage and culture, language and music, importance of sharing with young people, recalls migrant experience in 1950s-1960s and the importance of songs in this context.

01:56:56-02:02:28 - Nuruzzaman speaks of the importance of preserving this musical heritage for the next generations of Bangladeshis in the North West. He also talks of the great contributions and sacrifices of the earliest Bangladeshi migrant millworkers in the UK, and says how he has seen and experienced this first hand.
