The oldest book in the Manchester Public Libraries, it is a copy of the great law code of Emperor Justinian, first compiled in 529 A.D. The text and marginal commentary appear to be of the 13th century. The numerous marginal and interlined notes are in many hands and are enlivened by grotesques of faces and animals. There are 236 vellum leaves, the skin of calf or kid being prepared on both sides for the use of the scribe.
