Special Collections: Gaskell Collection

19th-20th cent.
Archives
The nucleus of this collection was donated in 1895 to Moss Side Public Library and subsequently absorbed into Manchester Public Libraries. It was augmented by donations from Mrs Gaskell's daughters and purchases from their estate, together with later significant donations
The collection includes the first published form, both serialized and in volumes, of all Mrs Gaskell's works with the exception of Cranford of which the earliest is the 2nd edition. Included also are the first two editions of the Life Of Charlotte Bronte which contain material suppressed in later editions and ultra-cheap reprints from the turn of the century, some of which are now extremely rare. There are also newspaper cuttings, periodical articles and various items - such as postcards - associated with Gaskell's works. In addition a small part of the collection contains the published work of the author's husband William Gaskell - primarily sermons and addresses
