Collected by Thomas Greenwood (1851-1908) a native of Stockport and later successful publisher in London and a great advocate for free public libraries. After the public library system became securely established, Greenwood collected together material on librarianship, bibliography and library education.
Donated to Manchester Public Libraries in 1904, as well as the general stock the collection includes some extremely rare material including the Nuremberg Chronicle (1493) and Conrad Gesner's Biblioteca Universalis (1545).
