The parish of St. Michael's and All Angels with St. Catherine' Barton Upon Irwell a was formed in 1971, from the two parishes of St. Michael's and St. Catherine's, St. Michael's became the parish church and St. Catherine's was demolished in 1972.
St. Catherine's was formed out of the parish of Eccles, and the church built on land given by Sir Thomas de Trafford. It was consecrated on 25 Oct. 1843.
In 1868 the parish of Christ Church, Patricroft, was formed, out of the parish of Eccles and in 1888 a school-church was built in South King St. Known as St. Michael's Mission it was licensed on 2 Apr. 1889. A temporary church was erected in Peel Green and dedicated on 18 Oct. 1926. The Conventional District of St. Michael and All Angels was formed in Dec.1934, and it became a new parish formed out of Christ Church parish in Nov.1936. The new church was completed in 1957.
