St. Margaret's chapel, in the parish of Prestwich, was consecrated on 8 July 1769. This building was demolished and a new church built, which was consecrated on 29 September 1879.
It was assigned as its District parts of the townships of Oldham and Chadderton, by Order in Council, 4 March 1835, (London Gazette, 5 May 1835).
In 1844 part of the parish was assigned to St. Matthew, Chadderton, St. John, Chadderton and St. Thomas, Werneth, by Order in Council, 7 October, (London Gazette, 22 October 1844).
Alterations with the boundaries of Emmanuel, Chadderton and Christ Church, Chadderton, were made by Order in Council, 22 March 1927, (London Gazette, 22 March).
In 1951 the Conventional District of St. Chad's, Limeside was formed.
