Middleton became a Borough in 1886. In 1974 the Borough became part of Rochdale Metropolitan Borough. Both Rochdale and Middleton continued to operate out of separate courthouses. In the 1990s the courthouse at Middleton was closed and all operations moved to Rochdale.

This collection was accessioned on 24th June 1996 (accession numbers 1597) following a re-shuffle in local government. They were transported to the record office from the courthouse, and the record office now holds the non-current records for the courts, which are sometimes requested by the courts or by solicitors.
The records for Oldham County Magistrates' Court are included in this collection up until 1974. Records for Oldham County Borough may be found in the archive A.OLD which also contains registers for Oldham County Magistrates Court for the early 1960s
