Salford became a County Borough in 1889 and acquired the right to appoint its own coroner. The Salford Borough Coroner was renamed the Salford City Coroner in 1926 when the title of city was conferred upon Salford. Other parts of the present City, that is, Eccles, Swinton and Pendlebury, Irlam, and Worsley, came within the district of Salford County Coroner.
In 1974 the County of Greater Manchester was created and the Greater Manchester (Coroner's Districts) Order 1974 divided the County into 4 Coroner's Districts; West, North, South, and Manchester. The Bolton Coroner has jurisdiction over the West District which consists of the metropolitan boroughs of Bolton, Wigan, and the City of Salford.
Transferred to Greater Manchester County Record Office in 2001
