St Mary's church consecrated on 28 June 1744, but it was not until 1844 that a District was assigned to it. (London Gazette, 30 Nov. 1844). By Order in Council 29 Mar. 1973 (London Gazette, 3 Apr. 1973) it was united with St. James, Wardleworth, as the parish of St. Mary with St. James, and its church became the parish church. Its churchyard closed in 1855 St James was consecrated in 1821 having been built as a result of a private Act for Building a Chapel of Ease in the Town of Rochdale, 14 June 1815 (see Archdeacon John Rushton's Visitation Papers MS f 942.71 R121 vol. 58). It was assigned a District in 1844 (London Gazette, 30 Nov. 1844). It was united with St. Mary's in 1973 and the church declared redundant. The parish of Wardleworth St. Mary with St. James was formed in 1973 when the two separate parishes were united by Order in Council of 29 Mar. 1973 (London Gazette 3 Apr. 1973), St. Mary becoming the parish church of the united benefice.
