Up until 1974 the jurisdiction of the Bolton Borough Coroner was for the Borough only. In 1974 the County of Greater Manchester was created and the Greater Manchester (Coroner's Districts) Order 1974 divided the County into 4 Coroner's Districts; West, North, South, and Manchester. The Bolton Coroner has jurisdiction over the West District which consists of the metropolitan boroughs of Bolton, Wigan, and the City of Salford.
