Up until 1974 the jurisdiction of the Rochdale Coroner was for the following : Crompton, Chadderton, Heywood, Littleborough, Middleton, Milnrow, Rochdale, Royton, Wardle, Whitworth. In 1974 the County of Greater Manchester was created and the Greater Manchester (Coroner's Districts) Order 1974 divided the county of Greater Manchester into 4 Coroner's Districts: West, North, South, and Manchester. The Rochdale Coroner has jurisdiction over the metropolitan boroughs of Rochdale, Bury, and Oldham which make up the North Division.
