In May 1858 a group of gentlemen formed themselves into a Committee for the erection of a church to serve the villages of Castleton Moor, Marland and Bluepits in the parish of Rochdale. Charles Butterworth donated an acre of land, the first sod was ceremoniously turned in Oct. 1859 and the corner stone laid in July 1860, and church opened in 1862. Before that services were held in a schoolroom. The church was assigned a District by Order in Council, 9 Jan. l86 1865 (London Gazette, 13 Jan. 1863).
