Magistrates records relate to the administration of justice within local government boundaries therefore their administrative history follows that of changes in local administration.
Bury became a Borough in 1876 and a County Borough 1889 . In 1911 parts of Radcliffe Urban District was added to it and in 1933 parts of Heywood Borough which had been a Borough since 1881. In 1974 Bury Metropolitan Borough was formed which comprised of Bury County Borough, Prestwich and Radcliffe Municipal Boroughs, Tottington, Whitefield Urban Districts and parts of Ramsbottom Urban District. Although Heywood Borough Court is represented in this archive, it is in fact a separate entity which amalgamated with Middleton to form a joint court.
