In 1863 David Turner established a drapery business at 81/83 Yorkshire Street, Rochdale. In 1890, half the premises were leased to Daniel Melia who traded at a tea merchant at 81 Yorkshire Street for a number of years.
In 1895 the company operated as a partnership between Turner and two employees, Harvey Schofield and Arthur Tattersall. It appears that they operated without articles, although a draft partnership was drawn up at that time. By 1907, Turner had retired with his part of the business handed over to Tattersall, although he retained ownership of the property and rented it to Scholfield and Tattersall who had agreed to continue trading as David Turner and Company. They acquired the lease of No 83 at this time, together with a loan of £2000 from Turner. The lease of No 81 was acquired two years later in 1909. This acquisition allowed the company to enlarge the premises by merging the two adjacent properties into one unit.
Turner died on 27 August 1916 and Schofield and Tattersall bought, from Turner's executors, the freehold of 83 Yorkshire St, together with that of the adjoining premises at No. 85. Schofield and Tattersall continued as partners until 1931 when the latter retired. Harvey Schofield's eldest son, Henry Norman, who had joined the firm on demobilisation from the army after the Great War, then entered into parnership with his father. This arrangement continued until 1940 when Harvey Schofield retired. Henry Norman was then sole proprietor until, having sold the premises in Yorkshire St. in 1958, he wound up the business during the next few years operated from smaller premises in Rochdale.
