Custodial history:
In 1859 the Association for the Prevention of Steam Boiler Explosions was formed. The name soon changed to the Steam Boiler Assurance Company and was located at 1 New Brown Street, Manchester. The Company's remit was to inspect newly constructed boilers and boilers in service and to insure them. The company was reconstituted in 1864 as the Boiler Insurance and Steam Power Company when it moved to 67 King Street. In 1873 the Company's activities were extended to engine inspection, advising on fuel economy and insurance against breakdown. In 1880 the Company was reconstructed, concentrating on insuring boilers, economisers, air receivers, etc. against damage from explosion and collapse, together with surrounding property; in addition, engines were insured against breakdown and damage, and the lives of employees and third parties were also covered. On 19 December 1896 the Company was reorganised as the Vulcan Boiler and General Insurance Company Limited. The Company underwrote, amongst other things, all branches of life and a comprehensive range of machinery risks. The Company purchased its Head Office at 67/69 King Street in 1901. The 'Vulcan' magazine was introduced in 1904. On 11 March 1920 the London Assurance Company purchased the Vulcan Boiler and General Insurance Company Ltd. In 1864 the National Boiler Insurance Company Limited was established operating from 22 St Ann's Square, Manchester. The Company developed along similar lines to the Boiler Insurance and Steam Power Company. In 1923 the Alliance Assurance Co Ltd took control of National Boiler and General Insurance Company. The Alliance Assurance Co Ltd went on the merge with the Sun Insurance Offices Ltd. In about 1965 the Alliance merged with the London Assurance Company. As a result the National Boiler and General Insurance Company and the Vulcan Boiler and General Insurance Company merged in 1966 to form the National and Vulcan Engineering Insurance Group. In 1971 the National Vulcan Group acquired Insurance Engineers Ltd.
