Custodial history:
Westhoughton was a chapelry in the parish of Eccles until the formation in 1541 of the parish of Deane. A small thatched building was in existence in the 16th century. This was replaced by a brick church in 1731. The dedication of this church is given as St Mary in Archdeacon John Rushton's Visitation Returns, mid 19th century, but when a District was assigned to it by Order in Council 23 January 1860 (London Gazette 25 January 1860) it was known as St Bartholomew's. The present church was built in 1869-70 and consecrated on 24 August 1870. Part of its District was assigned to the new church of St James, Daisy Hill, in 1882 by Order in Council, 6 February (London Gazette 10 February 1882).
