St. Barnabas's District was formed by Order in Council, 6 March 1896, (London Gazette, 10 March), from the parishes of St. George, Bolton, St. Matthew, Bolton, and St. Luke, Halliwell.
Services were held in the Neville Jones Jubilee School until the church was built. The cornerstone of St. Barnabas's church was laid on 25 May 1912, and the church consecrated on 10 June 1913.
By Order in Council, 27 October 1971, (London Gazette, 29 October), the parish was united with St. Matthew's as St. Matthew with St. Barnabas. St,. Barnabas's church was declared redundant in 1974 (Order in Council, 21 May, London Gazette, 28 May), and the following year permission was granted for its sale to the International Hindu Federation (Order in Council, 23 July 1975, London Gazette, 29 July).
