Custodial history:
By Order in Council, 31 July 1858, (London Gazette, 13 August), part of St Matthew's, Stretford, was assigned to the church of St Thomas, Old Trafford. However a judgement of the Court of Chancery, 16 January 1867, stated that a conveyance to the Church Building Commissioners of the fabric and site of St Thomas's was invalid, and the property was re-conveyed to Henshaws Blind Asylum and Manchester Schools for the Deaf and Dumb. The District reverted to St Matthew's, until 1875 when by Order in Council, 13 May (London Gazette, 14 May) it was assigned to St Gabriel's, Hulme. By 1899 it was regarded as being part of St Matthew's and became the District assigned to the new church of St Hilda's (Order in Council 7 October, (London Gazette, 17 October 1899). St Thomas's church became a chaplaincy in St Hilda' s parish, served by St Hilda's clergy. St Hilda's original church on Northumberland Rd. was consecrated in 1904. It was damaged by enemy action 22 December 1940 and from then Firswood Mission in the parish of St Peter's was used for services until the School Room was licensed, 27 January 1964. The new church of St Hilda's, Kings Rd., Firswood, was consecrated on 20 March 1965. Some of the original District assigned to St Hilda's was transferred to St John's, Old Trafford, by Order in Council 11 August (London Gazette, 12 August 1902). Some of St Matthew's, Stretford, was transferred to St Hilda's by Order in Council, 27 November (London Gazette, 2 December 1930). An entirely new parish was formed by Order in Council, 11 September 1958 (London Gazette, 12 September) by uniting St Hilda's with most of St Peter's, Stretford, but also including parts of St Matthew's, Stretford, St John's, Old Trafford and St Clement's, Chorlton cum Hardy, parts of the old parish going to St John's, Old Trafford, St Peter's, Stretford and St Gabriel's, Hulme.
