St Anne's was built at the expense of Joseph Sidebotham, F.R.A.S., of Erlesdene. The foundation stone was laid on 1 September 1880 and the church consecrated on 29 July 1882. It was assigned a District from the parishes of Christ Church, Denton and St George, Hyde, by Order in Council, 29 November 1881 (London Gazette 9 September).
As Joseph Sidebotham was a skilled photographer (and member of Manchester Photographic Society) he took a series of photographs showing the building of the church and rectory from the laying of the foundation stone to the completion of the church. Copies of the photographs cannot be made without the permission of the Parochial Church Council.
