Custodial history:
St Mary's church was consecrated on 1 July 1872. A District had earlier been assigned from the parish of Rochdale, comprising part of the township of Castleton, by Order in Council 7 January 1865, (London Gazette, 10 January). The boundaries with the parish of St Peter's, Newbold, were altered by Order in Council 19 December 1958, (London Gazette, 23 December).
