A.J. Phillips was born in New Tredegar, Wales, in 1872, and his early working years were spent as a mining engineer. In 1897 he took his B.A. at Durham, was ordained deacon in 1898 and priest in 1899. He served as curate at Blaenaven, Monmouthshire, 1889-1901, St. Mary's, Nelson, 1901-1903, St. Stephen's, Burnley 1904-1907 and St. Peter's, Preston, 1907-1910. In 1910 he was appointed vicar of St. Thomas's, Dixon Green, Farnworth, where he remained until 1915. From 1915 to 1923 he was vicar of Christ Church, Pendlebury, and from 1923 to 1927 vicar of St. Peter's, Ashton under Lyne. Prom there he went to Marville, Aston and Aston Round, Shropshire, where he stayed until 1938 when he went to Heath Town, Wolverhampton, until 1939, when he moved to St. Peter's, Bedfordshire. He retired from there in 1944, but continued as a licensed preacher for several years. He last appears in Crockford's Clerical Directory in 1961/62.
