St. Mary's was consecrated on 23 March 1865, services having previously been held in a licenced store room. A District was formed from St. Thomas's, Heaton Norris, by Order in Council, 29 June 1865, (London Gazette, 30 June 1865).
Part of the parish was assigned to St. Elizabeth's, Reddish, by Order in Council, 26 June 1884 (London Gazette, 11 July 1884).
