St. James's church was built in 1837 and assigned a District from the parish of Bury by Bishop's Instrument, 16 July 1840. Part was assigned to St. Michael, Bamford, by Order in Council, 2 March 1881 (London Gazette, 8 March 1881). By Order in Council, 11 June 1902, (London Gazette, 13 June) part of Middleton parish was added to St. James's. The parish of St. George's, Heap Bridge, was formed from St. James's by Order in Council, 9 September 1907, (London Gazette, 13 September), and in 1979 St. Margaret's, Heywood, was assigned a District partly from St. James's, by Order in Council, 14 March, (London Gazette, 20 March 1979).
