Custodial history:
These papers dating from the late 17th century relate to the Benthouse estate in Littleborough, Rochdale. The Stotts were a family of yeoman farmers. The earliest documented family member was James Stott in 1593 when the will of James Backley of Manchester noted that James Stott owed money to the testator. A deed of 1642 firmly establishes the family in Benthouse when Charles Stott transfered a lease to his son Robert and grandson Charles. The lease was initailly granted by Robert Holt of Stubley for 21 years. The archive includes a family tree detailing seven generations of the Stott family, the latest date being 1853.
