Custodial history:
The English Folk Dance and Song Society was formed in 1932 by merger of the Folk Song Society (formed 1898) and the English Folk Dance Society founded in 1911 by Cecil Sharp. Both origianal organisations had been set up to collect, preserve and promote English folk traditions. The English Folk Song Society became the focus of folksong collectors led by Sharp. The latter was helped in forming the Folk Dance Society by two sisters, Helen and Maud Karpeles. In 1924 Sharp died and his replacement as Director of the Society was taken up by Douglas Kennedy and it was he who invited the Folk Song Society to merge to form the English Folk Dance and Song Society. One of the greatest contributions that the EFDSS made to the folk movement was the folk festival starting at Stratford upon Avon in the 1940s. This archive deals with the Manchester District Branch.
