The ancient parish of Bolton le Moors comprised the townships of Little Bolton, Great Bolton, Tonge with Haulgh, Sharples, Longworth, Turton, Quariton, Entwisle, Edgeworth, Harwood, Breightmet, Bradshaw, Darcy Lever, Little Lever, Blackrod, Rivington, Anglezark and Lostock. Within the parish of Bolton were the ancient chapelries of Blackrod,Bradshaw, Rivington, Turton and Walmsley, which were given defined Districts, and taken from the jurisdiction of the mother church as follows:- Christ Church, Walmsley, (London Gazette, 17 December 1844) St. Maxentius, Bradshaw, (London Gazette, 4 March 1853) St. Katherine, Blackrod, (London Gazette, 2 August 1858) St. Anne, Turton, (London Gazette, 23 December 1881) During the 18th and 19th centuries many new churches were built in the parish of Bolton and assigned Districts from it, as follows:- All Saints, Little Bolton, consecrated 1743, (London Gazette, 12 November 1841)St. Matthew, Little Lever, consecrated 1791, (London Gazette, 11 May 1866) St. George, Little Bolton, consecrated 1796, (London Gazette, 12 November 1841) Holy Trinity, Great Bolton, consecrated 1826, (London Gazette, 12 November 1841) Emmanuel, Bolton, consecrated 1839, (London Gazette, 12 November 1841) Christ Church, Harwood, consecrated 1841 St. Stephen, Lever Bridge, consecrated 1845, (London Gazette, 3 June 1844) St. Paul, Astley Bridge, consecrated 1848, (London Gazette, 3 June 1844) St. Peter, Belmont, consecrated 1850, (London Gazette, 6 August 1861) Tonge (St. James, Breightmet), consecrated 1855, (London Gazette, 1 July 1845) St. John the Evangelist, Wingates, consecrated 1859, (London Gazette, 31 March 1860) St. Paul, Bolton, consecrated 1865, (London Gazette, 13 April 1866) St. James the Apostle, Bolton, consecrated 1871, (London Gazette, 23 April 1872) St. Matthew, Bolton, consecrated 1875, (London Gazette, 29 October 1875 All Souls, Bolton, consecrated 1881, (London Gazette, 12 December 1879) Alterations were made to the boundaries with the parish of Lever Bridge, by Order in Council, 3 May 1888, (London Gazette, 8 May 1888), and part of the parish of Bolton was assigned to St. Chad's, Tonge Fold, by Order in Council, 16 December 1912, (London Gazette, 20 December 1912). With the closure of town centre churches in the late 20th century, the parish of St. Peter re-absorbed some of its old territory. The former parishes of St. John, Little Bolton, and All Saints, Little Bolton, were re-united with St. Peter's, by Pastoral Measure, 22 March 1968, (London Gazette, 4 April 1968). In 1973, by Pastoral Measure, 19 January, (London Gazette, 23 January 1973), the former parishes of St. George, Little Bolton, Holy Trinity, Great Bolton, and St. Mark, Great Bolton, were re-united with St. Peter's.
