A District was assigned to St. John's by Order in Council, 6 April 1846, (London Gazette. 10 April 1846), from the Districts of All Saints and St. George, Bolton.
The church was consecrated on 19 December 1849.
Part of the parish was assigned to the new parish of St. Chad, Tonge Fold, by Order in Council, 16 December 1912, (London Gazette. 20 December 1912).
In 1948, by Order in Council, 27 April, (London Gazette. 30 April 1948), St. John's was united with All Saints, as Little Bolton, St. John, with Bolton le Moors, All Saints, though the parishes remained distinct.
By Pastoral Measure, 22 March 1968, (London Gazette,4 April 1968), St. John with All Saints was united with the parish of St. Peter, Bolton.
