The club was established by a young ladies class at Moss Side Baptist Sunday School in 1916 with its club name as Manchester Sunday School Union Ladies Hockey League. Moss Side became one of the Founder Clubs when the Manchester Sunday School Union decided to form a Hockey League, with Doris Mitchell from Zion as its secretary. The actual Manchester Women's Hockey League was formed in 1921. In 1945 the club changed its name to Manchester Women's Hockey League.
